The Lincoln Handicap

The Lincoln Handicap is the first big betting race of the flat season and is a very competitive event, always attracting a large field. Horses aged four or older are eligible for the event which is run over a mile.

Due to the re-development of Doncaster racecourse, the Lincoln Handicap took place at Redcar in 2006 and Newcastle in 2007.

Doncaster Course Description

Doncaster is a left-handed, pear-shaped, galloping, flat track of 1mile, 7½ furlongs.

Lincoln Handicap Trends

Favourites have a fair record in this event, with four winners in the last ten years which includes one joint favourite.

Paul Cole is a trainer to watch in the Lincoln, with three winners in the last eleven years.

Runners carrying nine stone or less have won eight of the last ten renewals.

Seven of the last ten winners have been aged either four or five years old.

Although a lot of winners come back to try again the following year, back to back winners is a rarity with Babur being the last in 1957 and 1958.

Lincoln Draw Bias

As far as the draw is concerned, the advantage seems to change from year to year. The best clue is to take note of the finishing positions of the runners in the races leading up to the Lincoln. The Spring Mile should give a good indication being run over the same trip for horses balloted out of the Lincoln.
