2010 Grand National Betting

The 2010 Grand National is sure to be a competitive betting heat. The prices of the 2009 Grand National runners will certainly get shorter the closer we get to the day of the race and those at the front of the market often contract considerably in the hours before the off.

Although the Grand National appears to be a bit of a lottery where prices are concerned, 13 of the last 18 winners have actually come from the first eight in the market. Big priced winners do happen, just not as often as you might think.

There have been 5 100/1 winners in Grand National history, Tipperary Tim in 1928, Gregalach in 1929, Caughoo in 1947, Foinavon in 1967 and Mon Mome in 2009. That means there has only been one winner as big as 100/1 in the last 42 years, although that was only last season! The highest priced winners prior to that in recent times has been 33/1 with Silver Birch winning in 2007 as well as Red Marauder in 2001.

Trainer and jockey combinations are sure to have an affect on the 2010 Grand National betting. Not many jockeys or trainers manage to win the race more than once but Ruby Walsh has done so in this decade. He won on Papillon in 2000 at odds of 10/1 for his father Ted Walsh, and landed a major Grand National gamble in the process. Ruby also landed the 2005 National on the ultra consistent Grand National performer Hedgehunter, he was the 7/1 favourite.

Not many trainers have managed a Grand National double in recent years. Nigel Twiston Davies is the last to achieve this feat with Earth Summit, who headed the 1998 Grand National betting at odds of 7/1, and Bindaree in 2002 at a more generous 20/1.

A female has not trained a National winner since 1995 when Jenny Pitman’s Royal Athlete won at the rewarding price of 40/1. In fact, Jenny Pitman is the only female trainer to have won a Grand National. She has managed two wins, the first being Corbiere in 1983. Could 2010 be the year we seen another woman mastermind a Grand National win?
