Cheltenham Festival Trends

Day Three

The Cheltenham Festival takes place in the middle of March and is undoubtedly the biggest race meeting of the National Hunt season.

Betting on the festival races can often be made a whole lot easier and more successful, by using trends to narrow down the selection process.

Use these trends to help you to come up with your Cheltenham festival tips.

Race by race Trends

Jewson Novices Handicap Chase

One of the races added to the card in 2005.

All 5 winners had only one win over fences.

4 of the 5 winners of the Jewson have been aged seven.

4 of the 5 winners finished 1st or 2nd on their previous start.

Pertemps Final Handicap Hurdle

This is a major betting heat with some monster gambles. Avoid five year olds like the plague, six year olds have an outstanding record. Just 1 winning five year old in the last 35 renewals.

Only 1 winning favourite from the last 15.

9 of the last 10 winners carried 11st 2lbs or less.

13 of the last 17 winners had previously won over 3 miles.

Ryanair Chase

Another of the races introduced in 2005. The Paddy Power Gold Cup may prove a good pointer for this race.

2 of the 5 Ryanair Chases have been won by trainer Paul Nicholls.

All 5 winners had won previously at Cheltenham.

All 5 winners were in the first 3 in the betting market.

World Hurdle

The feature race of day three. Look for a horse aged between six and eight. There have been very few shocks in recent years and hold up horse also tend to do well.

All of the last 10 winners finished 1st or 2nd last time out.

No five year old has never won the race.

An Irish trainer has not won the World Hurdle for 14 years.

9 of the last 10 winners started at odds of 8/1 or less.

Byrne Group Plate

Formerly called the Racing Post Plate and the Mildmay of Flete, Venetia Williams holds a good recent record in the event.

French bred runners have a good record having won 6 of the last 10 renewals and have finished 2nd in the other 4.

9 of the last 10 winners have all been double figure odds.

13 of the last 15 winners carried no more than 11 stone.

Since 1981 there has been only 1 winning favourite.

Kim Muir Challenge Cup

Another amateur riders race and a hard one to predict at that with 7 winners at double figure odds from the last 10.

25 of the last 29 winners have been aged 8 or older.

16 of the last 20 winners have carried 11st or less.
