Champion Hurdle

Unlike last year when Binocular dominated the Ante Post betting for the Champion Hurdle, there isn't one horse out on it's own at the head of the market in 2010. It is another Nicky Henderson runner in Zaynar that just about shades favouritism, but he is very closely shadowed in the market by two Irish challengers, Solwhit and Go Native.

Last year's winner Punjabi is becoming the forgotten horse in the race and is now as big as 14/1 in places. He hasn't shown the same level of form this season and has been beaten on both his starts but it would be foolish to right off this tough horse who has been there and done it already. At a best priced 14/1, he looks definite each way value and one of our Cheltenham festival tips.

My strongest personally fancy is the Nigel Twiston Davies trained Khyber Kim. When this horse made a winning debut for Nicky Henderson, he was expected to go onto much bigger and better things. For one reason or another, that just didn't happen and he began to look like a very disappointing horse indeed, one that was never going to fulfil his potential. That all changed this year. Twiston Davies and jockey Paddy Brennan have worked out how to get the best from Khyber Kim and he showed his win in the Greatwood Hurdle was no fluke when following up in the Grade 2 Boylesports International, beating some serious Champion Hurdle contenders in the process. The strong pace of a Champion Hurdle is sure to suit and I can envisage Khyber Kim coming through to win the race in the final strides.

Queen Mother Champion Chase

Although he's had his problems this season, Paul Nicholls Master Minded is the solid 6/4 favourite for the 2010 Queen Mother Champion Chase. The fact he was beaten in the Connaught Chase in November and hasn't been seen since is the only reason he isn't odds on for the race he's won the last two years. We know how good Paul Nicholls is at getting horses back from injury so that price could look value come March 17th

Kalahari King put himself right in the frame for this race after winning the Blue Square Handicap Chase at Doncaster last weekend when saddled with top weight. It was an impressive performance and Ferdy Murphy's nine year old must hold decent claims if Master Minded is at anything less than his best.

While I believe Master Minded will be very tough to beat again this year, at a more sporting price, the Irish Challenger Barker makes plenty of each way appeal at 25/1 with Sportingbet. This horse slammed last years Arkle winner Forpadydeplasterer at Punchestown last April by 15 lengths and that was on the back of a short head 2nd place finish in the Grade 1 Powers Gold Cup. He was going ok before unseating in his only start that season but going on his previous form, Barker looks good value at 25's

World Hurdle

The biggest certainty at the 2010 Cheltenham Festival is supposedly Big Buck in the World Hurdle. While it would be a brave man to back against Paul Nicholls' superb animal, the general quotes of 4/7 make little appeal as an Ante Post bet for most punters. I think we are best to look for an each way selection against the favourite, and I managed to come up with two!

Tidal Bay had become very stale over fences. His form was becoming more and more patchy and it was looking unlikely he was going to achieve anything to match his Arkle victory in 2008 over the bigger obstacles. Howard Johnson's decision to put him in the Betfair Cleeve Hurdle was an inspired one as he won the Grade 2 event in impressive fashion and installed himself as 3rd favourite for the World Hurdle in the process. Tidal Bay has an outstanding record over hurdles having never finished outside the first two. He looks a solid each way bet for the 2010 World Hurdle.

Before Tidal Bay's victory a couple of weeks ago, my only Ante Post bet for the World Hurdle had been on the Nicky Henderson trained Sentry Duty. I was really impressed by the manner of his win in the Freedom Hurdle when beating Katchit and Mr Thriller. I realise he had the run of the race that day but the step up in trip appeared to suit and I can imagine him being suited by a bit further still. He is also likely to get the race run to his liking in the World Hurdle.

Gold Cup

Is it getting boring now? Not for me! It's great to see Kauto Star going for a third Gold Cup and stablemate Denman being back to his best to make a serious race of it. The only boring part is the fact no other horse has come through as a serious contender to these two for the last three years.

From a punting point of view it's the same situation as we had in 2008. Do you back the class and reliability of Kauto, or do you get involved with the horse that is arguably more suited to the track but has more questions to answer in Denman. The only difference in 2010 from 2008 is the added McCoy factor. The booking of Tony McCoy for Denman certainly has to be viewed as a positive, and his victory in the Hennessey showed he was back to his best. On the other hand, Kauto Star looked better than ever when winning the King George earlier in the season. It's just a shame the Gold Cup isn't run at Kempton!

I'm not even going to try and split them this time, but what I will do is try and highlight a speculative each way selection. What A Friend would have been a strong fancy to fill the third spot but trainer Paul Nicholls has said he's more likely to go to Aintree or Punchestown.

Money Trix is a best priced 66/1 in the 2010 Gold Cup Ante Post market and that looks on the generous side to me. Although he disappointed behind Joncol last time, I think the heavy ground wasn't to his liking and his form prior to that had been rock solid including a 2nd place finish behind What A Friend in the Lexus Chase. Admittedly he has it all to do against Kauto and Denman, but there is no reason why he can't take 3rd spot at a big price.

1pt e/w Money Trix @ 66/1 with Skybet
