Breeders Cup Guide

The Breeders Cup began in 1984 and takes place every year around the end of October. It is the biggest race meeting in America and also attracts a number of horses from Europe. The 2009 Breeders Cup takes place on Friday 6th and Saturday 7th November at Santa Anita Park.

There are 14 races on the Breeders Cup card, details of which are listed below. Things have changed slightly in recent times, with the Breeders Cup meeting now run over two days. The first day consists of six races, those for the fillies and mares. Day two is an eight race card and includes the $5 million Breeders Cup Classic.

Three new races were added to the meeting in 2007, Dirt Mile, Juvenile Turf and Filly and Mare Sprint. A further three races have been added for 2008, Turf Sprint, Marathon and Juvenile Filly Turf.

Breeders Cup Day 1

Breeders' Cup Marathon – One mile and four furlongs weight for age race for horses aged 3 and older. Prize money $500,000.

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf - One mile turf stakes race for 2yo fillies. Prize money $1,000,000.

Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint – Seven furlong weight for age stakes for fillies and mares aged 3 and older. Prize money $1,000,000.

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies – One mile and half a furlong race for 2yo fillies. Prize money $2,000,000.

Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf - One mile and two furlongs weight for age turf race for fillies and mares aged 3 and older. Prize money $2,000,000.

Breeders' Cup Ladies Classic – One mile and one furlongs weight for age race for fillies and mares aged 3 and older. Prize money $2,000,000.

Breeders Cup Day 2

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf - One mile turf race for two year old horses. Prize money $1,000,000.

Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile – One mile weight for age stakes race for horses aged 3 and older. Prize money $1,000,000.

Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint - Six and a half furlong weight for age stakes race for horses aged 3 and older. Prize money $1,000,000.

Breeders' Cup Juvenile – One mile and half a furlong race for 2yo colts and geldings. Prize money $2,000,000.

Breeders' Cup Sprint – Six furlong Grade 1 weight for age race for horses aged 3 years and older. Prize money $2,000,000.

Breeders' Cup Mile – One mile Grade 1 weight for age race for horses aged 3 years and older. Prize money $2,000,000.

Breeders' Cup Turf – One mile and four furlongs Grade 1 weight for age race for horses aged 3 years and older. Prize money $3,000,000.

Breeders' Cup Classic – One mile and two furlongs Grade 1 weight for age race for horses aged 3 years and older. Prize money $5,000,000.

Breeders Cup races allow no more than fourteen runners apart from the Dirt Mile, Juvenile Fillies Turf and Juvenile Turf which only allow twelve participants. For races that are over subscribed, a points system is used based on the performance of entrants in Breeders Cup Challenge Races, followed by the judgement of a panel of racing experts to decide who takes part.

Breeders Cup Stats and Trends

A lot of punters like to follow certain jockeys and trainers at the meeting and this approach can prove profitable. Below are a few pointers that may be of some help.

The three most successful jockeys at the meeting are Pat Day, Jerry Bailey and Chris McCarron, with 36 wins and over $60 million in prize money between them.

D. Wayne Lukas is out on his own on the training front, with 18 winners and just under $20 million in prize money. Of the European contingent, Andre Fabre leads the way with 4 winners and over $7.5 million in prize money.
