Breeders Cup GuideThe Breeders Cup began in 1984 and takes place every year around the start of November. It is the biggest race meeting in America and also attracts a number of horses from Europe. There are eight races on the Breeders Cup card, listed below, and all are Grade 1 races. The first six races on the card can vary in order but the Turf and Classic are normally the last two races on the card. Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies: A 1 1/16-mile race for 2-year-old fillies. Current purse is $2 million. Breeders' Cup Juvenile: A 1 1/16-mile race for 2-year-old colts and geldings. Current purse is $2 million. Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf: A 1 3/8-mile or 1 1/4-mile race on grass for fillies and mares, 3 years old and up. Current purse is $2 million. Breeders' Cup Sprint: A 6 Furlong Race. Current purse is $2 million. Breeders' Cup Mile: A 1-mile race on grass. Current purse is $2 million. Breeders' Cup Distaff: A 1 1/8-mile race for fillies and mares, 3 years old and up. Current purse is $2 million. Breeders' Cup Turf: A 1 1/2-mile race on grass. Current purse is $3 million. Breeders' Cup Classic: A 1 1/4-mile race. Current purse is $5 million. Breeders Cup races allow no more than fourteen runners. If more than fourteen are entered, the first seven runners are decided based on points they have earned in graded stakes races. The second seven are decided by a select panel. From this year, the Breeders Cup will take place over two days, Friday 26th and Saturday 27th October 2007 at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, New Jersey. The races taking place on the first day are as follows; Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile: for 3-year-olds and up. Purse is $1 million. Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint: A seven-furlong race for fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up. Purse is $1 million. Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf: A one-mile event on grass open to 2-year-old colts, geldings, and fillies. Purse is $1 million.
