Scoop 6 Select

Scoop 6 Select

Last week’s Nap Twist Magic won in impressive fashion and we also managed to find Bet365 Gold Cup winner Hennessy. There were three winning tickets of last Saturday’s Scoop 6 with each landing a huge payout of £310,408.39. They all have a chance at this week’s bonus fund of £399,097.

Here are our thoughts on this week’s Scoop 6 races.

Newmarket 2.00 – This year’s Suffolk Handicap is an interesting race in that we have a number of unexposed horses that could be better than their handicap marks suggest. One horse that has been there and done it is last year’s winner Proponent. He’s been slightly disappointing since that victory but he’s back down to a mark of 94, only 4lbs higher than the win in ‘08 and the fact he’s back over a mile is also a positive for me. He probably needed the run last time and a tissue price of 16/1 looks very juicy. Bottom weight Mohathab could be well in off a mark of 82. He took my eye last year when finishing 2nd in a couple of maidens under Seb and has since left John Gosden to join the Boyle yard. He won a reasonable maiden at Lingfield last month and could well get involved off a light weight here.

Goodwood 2.20 – A horrible little handicap to get us underway at Goodwood. Likely favourite King Supreme is up 6lbs for his win at Brighton last month and would be a horse I’d like to take on normally but the opposition doesn’t look especially strong. Mark Tompkins’ runner Mystery Star has put up a couple of decent efforts this year but hasn’t managed to win and up 5lbs in the handicap isn’t likely to. The one that makes most appeal is top weight King Olav. He disappointed last time but his 2nd to Philatelist at Kempton in March reads well and I fancy Seb Sanders to give this horse the strong treatment he needs.

Goodwood 2.55 – This is quite a good little Listed race and one in which I fancy the chances of the Roger Charlton trained Scuffle. She was a bit disappointing at Kempton last time but probably needed the run and should show marked improvement here. For me, the main danger is likely to come from the runner from the Clive Cox yard, Perfect Star.

Newmarket 3.10 – The 2000 Guineas has been dominated by the Irish in recent years and they look to have a strong had again in 2009. Rip Van Winkle, Mastercraftsman and Sea The Stars all hail from the Emerald Isle and are all single figures in the betting market. Mastercraftsman is the one I feel best equipped to take the big race spoils back to Ireland this time around. Although all the talk is about Rip Van Winkle, I much prefer the profile of Pat Smullen’s mount and Mastercraftsman is a very fair price at 4/1 and bigger. Of those at double figures, I would be really please to see Lord Shanakill run a big race. He was a model of consistency last season and only disappointed when taken off his feet over 5f at Doncaster. This step up to a mile should suit and he can finish in the 1st three.

Goodwood 3.30 – Peter Island was the one that stuck out like a sore thumb immediately I looked at this race and I’m going to stick with the runner from the Gallagher yard. Chris Catlin’s mount is a course and distance winner and won in impressive fashion at Leicester last time out. A 7lb rise doesn’t look too bad and I think he can lead from the gates and make it back to back wins. Aye Aye Digby could pose the biggest threat. Henry Candy’s gelding ran well on his seasonal reappearance at Folkstone last month and is on a winning mark.

Newmarket 3.45 – Maybe it’s my heart ruling my head slightly but I really can’t see any reason to oppose Borderlescott in this year’ renewal of the Palace House Stakes. He’s one of the most consistent, genuine horses in training, goes well fresh and has been placed in all of his last ten starts. He won the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes here last August and I can’t see any reason to desert him in this Group 3 contest.

Scoop 6 Select

Scoop 6 Select

The Scoop 6 wasn’t won again last weekend and the win fund currently stands at a massive £518,617 with the bonus fund at an equally impressive £222,265.

There are bound to be some big syndicates getting involved with the sums on offer this Saturday but lets see if we can blow them out the water by dissecting the races with our Scoop 6 Select!

2.05 Newbury – I felt Scintillo was very impressive when winning the Winter Derby holding of Premio Loco last month and he could well have a fitness edge over some of today’s rivals. He should prove a difficult opponent for favourite Spanish Moon. Sir Michael Stoute’s runner does look tough to beat on form and it’s very hard to see him finishing outside the first 3 after a recent pipe opener. A repeat of his effort in the Group 1 Dubai Sheema Classic would make him very hard to beat.

2.35 Newbury – A decent quality handicap here but with 25 runners going to post, it looks almost impossible. John Gosden’s Charm School is worth another chance after his slightly disappointing run in the Lincoln last month. He probably didn’t have the best of draws that day and stayed on well to finish 8th. Zaahid ran a big race to finish 2nd that day but he’s up another 3lbs and is opposable off 99. The unexposed Manassas is probably also worth keeping on the right side of after the improved form he showed to win the Spring Mile at Doncaster. He’s up 5lbs for that victory but that doesn’t look harsh.

2.50 Ayr – The Scottish Champion Hurdle features a number of horses that have been on the go for a long time. It may pay to look for a fresh runner and I quite like the profile of Nicky Richards’ Noble Alan. He disappointed behind Sentry Duty at Ascot but his pull in the weights should seem him finish closer to that rival and it looks like they have kept him off the track since with this target in mind. 16/1 looks good value. Of those at the head of the market, Medermit would be the one most likely to run his race.

3.10 Newbury – I don’t often get heavily involved in fillies races because the form doesn’t always hold up but I do like the look of Mick Channon’s Lahaleeb. She’s a Group 2 winner and has also won over course and distance. There are a number of unexposed fillies in the line up but Daryl Holland’s mount certainly sets the standard.

Sir Michael Stoute has a healthy 20.3% strike rate at Newbury and Purissima is worth consideration. She won very nicely at Warwick before disappointing at Newmarket but that race could well have come too soon.

3.25 Ayr – I’m going to use trends to narrow down the field for the Scottish National;
Oppose any runners that competed in this season’s Aintree Grand National.

7 of the last 10 winners finished 1st, 2nd or 3rd last time out.

7 of the last 11 winners have been eight year olds.

Only 2 winning favourites in the last 10 years (one of which was a joint favourite).

Trainer Ferdy Murphy has won 3 of the last 9 renewals.

8 of the last 11 winners were 1st or 2nd season chasers.

9 of the last 10 winners had unseated or fallen less than twice previously.

The one that makes most appeal using this approach is Ferdy Murphy’s Nine De Sivola. Murphy has a great record here and the horse fits the majority of the key trends. Merigo is a worthy alternative if the rain continues to fall between now and post time. The more of a slog it turns into, the better for the chances of Timmy Murphy’s ride.

3.45 NewburyLord Shanakill makes most appeal for me in this Group 3 contest. He was a model of consistency last season and finished 2nd in the Group 1 Dewhurst in his final start, just ahead of Marcus Tregoning’s Finjan. It should be close between the pair of them again today but I just feel Karl Burke’s runner has the heart of a lion and would be tough in a tight finish.
