The Scoop 6 was won last week by a single ticket who collected £75,475. This week’s Scoop 6 races are as follows;
2.05 Goodwood
2.20 Newmarket
2.50 Newmarket
3.25 Newmarket
3.35 Beverley
3.45 Goodwood
As the Celebration Mile doesn’t make up part of this weeks Scoop 6, the biggest race of the day as far as Scoop 6 punters are concerned is probably the 3.25 from Newmarket, the Bet365 Hopeful Stakes, a Listed race over 6 furlongs. It’s a very interesting contest with four course and distance winners in the field.

Scoop 6 Select The less said about last week’s attempt the better with only one winner and a non runner. There were no winners of last Saturday’s Scoop 6 but 390 people managed to land the place money, each receiving £139.40. The bonus fund was also won so now stands at £40,803.
Here are our thoughts on this week’s Scoop 6 races. It’s a slimmed down version this week which some of you may think is a good thing!
Haydock 1.55 – A huge field go to post for this grade 3 hurdle. Howard Johnson’s Caravel looks interesting now he goes handicapping having won 3 novice hurdles on the bounce. Right at the bottom of the weights, Hot Diamond could go well at a big price.
Lingfield 2.10 – This race looks as though it could be quite straightforward for the Walter Swinburn trained Laudatory. He won well last time and 83 doesn’t seem like a harsh mark to follow up from. At bigger odds, course and distance winner Kaabari makes some appeal.
Ascot 2.15 – It look like a more impossible Scoop 6 than normal with the 3rd leg, the Victoria Cup, having 29 runners. Prescription under Seb Sanders warrants respect but this filly is too short in the market for my liking on what she has achieved thus far. Mr Macattack gets in here on a nice weight and won in very impressive fashion last time albeit in a weak race. Fishforcompliments should go well under his talented apprentice after finishing 2nd to Mr Hardy last time. That horse has franked the form by winning again this week.
Nottingham 2.25 – I’m not a fan of these longer distance handicaps really. Sri Kuantan won last time but has been a bit inconsistent in previous starts and is probably worth taking on again. Silk Hall should go well even under top weight but at a bigger price, Four Miracles can bounce back to form now dropped in grade.
Haydock 3.05 – Outsider of the field Sammy The Snake was quite well supported on his first run for sometime at Kempton recently. Although he finished last of 5, he did show that he still retains a decent level of ability and is a big price for me at 20/1. Top weight Appalachian Trail won this race last year and although he has disappointed since, he’s worth chancing off this mark.
Lingfield 3.45 – A decent fillies stakes to finish this weeks Scoop 6 with £65,000 in prize money on offer. I’m very keen on the chances of the William Haggas runner Damaniyat Girl. She put up a great performance chasing home Fantasia at Newmarket last time and the Haggas stable had a decent winner at Chester on Friday.

Scoop 6 Select Last week’s Nap Twist Magic won in impressive fashion and we also managed to find Bet365 Gold Cup winner Hennessy. There were three winning tickets of last Saturday’s Scoop 6 with each landing a huge payout of £310,408.39. They all have a chance at this week’s bonus fund of £399,097.
Here are our thoughts on this week’s Scoop 6 races.
Newmarket 2.00 – This year’s Suffolk Handicap is an interesting race in that we have a number of unexposed horses that could be better than their handicap marks suggest. One horse that has been there and done it is last year’s winner Proponent. He’s been slightly disappointing since that victory but he’s back down to a mark of 94, only 4lbs higher than the win in ‘08 and the fact he’s back over a mile is also a positive for me. He probably needed the run last time and a tissue price of 16/1 looks very juicy. Bottom weight Mohathab could be well in off a mark of 82. He took my eye last year when finishing 2nd in a couple of maidens under Seb and has since left John Gosden to join the Boyle yard. He won a reasonable maiden at Lingfield last month and could well get involved off a light weight here.
Goodwood 2.20 – A horrible little handicap to get us underway at Goodwood. Likely favourite King Supreme is up 6lbs for his win at Brighton last month and would be a horse I’d like to take on normally but the opposition doesn’t look especially strong. Mark Tompkins’ runner Mystery Star has put up a couple of decent efforts this year but hasn’t managed to win and up 5lbs in the handicap isn’t likely to. The one that makes most appeal is top weight King Olav. He disappointed last time but his 2nd to Philatelist at Kempton in March reads well and I fancy Seb Sanders to give this horse the strong treatment he needs.
Goodwood 2.55 – This is quite a good little Listed race and one in which I fancy the chances of the Roger Charlton trained Scuffle. She was a bit disappointing at Kempton last time but probably needed the run and should show marked improvement here. For me, the main danger is likely to come from the runner from the Clive Cox yard, Perfect Star.
Newmarket 3.10 – The 2000 Guineas has been dominated by the Irish in recent years and they look to have a strong had again in 2009. Rip Van Winkle, Mastercraftsman and Sea The Stars all hail from the Emerald Isle and are all single figures in the betting market. Mastercraftsman is the one I feel best equipped to take the big race spoils back to Ireland this time around. Although all the talk is about Rip Van Winkle, I much prefer the profile of Pat Smullen’s mount and Mastercraftsman is a very fair price at 4/1 and bigger. Of those at double figures, I would be really please to see Lord Shanakill run a big race. He was a model of consistency last season and only disappointed when taken off his feet over 5f at Doncaster. This step up to a mile should suit and he can finish in the 1st three.
Goodwood 3.30 – Peter Island was the one that stuck out like a sore thumb immediately I looked at this race and I’m going to stick with the runner from the Gallagher yard. Chris Catlin’s mount is a course and distance winner and won in impressive fashion at Leicester last time out. A 7lb rise doesn’t look too bad and I think he can lead from the gates and make it back to back wins. Aye Aye Digby could pose the biggest threat. Henry Candy’s gelding ran well on his seasonal reappearance at Folkstone last month and is on a winning mark.
Newmarket 3.45 – Maybe it’s my heart ruling my head slightly but I really can’t see any reason to oppose Borderlescott in this year’ renewal of the Palace House Stakes. He’s one of the most consistent, genuine horses in training, goes well fresh and has been placed in all of his last ten starts. He won the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes here last August and I can’t see any reason to desert him in this Group 3 contest.

Scoop 6 Select We managed to find a couple of winners last week with Noble Alan winning at 17/2 and Lahaleeb at 6/1. There were no winners of the Scoop 6 this past Saturday which means the win fund now stands at £679,514 and the bonus fund is now £291,220. Last week’s place dividend paid a huge £2,965.80.
Here are our thoughts on this week’s Scoop 6 races.
Sandown 2.05 – An interesting handicap hurdle to kick off proceedings. Nicky Henderson and David Pipe both need to be respected in this race and I think the Pipe runner Seven Is My Number holds strong claims. He’s been disappointing since finishing 2nd here behind the Henderson trained Dave’s Dream. The horse was given far too much to do on that occasion and on reflection, ran a superb race to finish 2nd. Back at Sandown, I think he’ll run a big race. At the top of the handicap, French Opera would also have strong claims with his pilot claiming the 5lb. His performance back over hurdles at Aintree last time was very good and I can see this horse staying on well up the tough Sandown run in.
Ripon 2.20 – I’m not a fan of three year old handicaps and this race is no different. Coleorton Choice is a course and distance winner, has a run under his belt this season and seems to act on any going. Excellent Show is probably the most interesting horse in the field. They felt he was good enough to contest the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes at Ascot last season and although the he disappointed he did have a poor draw and could turn out to be a bit better than these rivals.
Sandown 2.35 – As impressed as I have been by Kalahari King this season, I think he’ll find it tough against Twist Magic at the track he loves. At the tissue prices of 5/4 Kalahari King and 3/1 Twist Magic, I’d be seriously considering a single bet on the Nicholls runner. He looked like he was going to make a race of it against Master Minded in the Tingle Creek here in December before falling 2 out. Being prone to the odd error is a worry but I’d still go with Twist Magic to notch up his 2nd victory at Sandown.
Ripon 2.55 – Another poor race that has the makings of a Scoop 6 buster. Top weight Mr Wolf looks the most likely winner but I’ll be very surprised if there isn’t one lurking at the bottom of the handicap that is well in. It wouldn’t be the biggest surprise in the world to see Fantasy Believer pop up at a big price but I’m not sure his handicap mark is going down as quickly as his ability. I will go with consistent gelding Strathmore who should go well with only 8-6 on his back. He’s another who’s vunlnerable to a better handicapped horse but at least he’s likely to give us a run for our money something that is hard to be confident about most of these doing.
Sandown 3.10 – The Bet365 Gold Cup sees a quality field go to post but the worry I would have with a number of these runners is the amount of racing they have seen this season. The two that interest me most here are Carl Llewellyn’s Hennessy and the Phillip Hobbs trained Lacdoudal. McCoy is a very interesting booking on Llewellyn’s runner and he won the only time he rode the horse previously. Lacdoudal won this race in 2006 off a 12lbs higher mark and has to be respected.
Ripon 3.30 – A decent handicap to finish where likely favourite Wells Lyrical should prove hard to be. He looked to be going very much the right way last season and the step up in trip can offset his 6lb rise in the weights. Dunaskin is a course winner and might have the fitness edge over some of these rivals after his pipe opener 17 days ago. He is a solid alternative.

Scoop 6 Select The Scoop 6 wasn’t won again last weekend and the win fund currently stands at a massive £518,617 with the bonus fund at an equally impressive £222,265.
There are bound to be some big syndicates getting involved with the sums on offer this Saturday but lets see if we can blow them out the water by dissecting the races with our Scoop 6 Select!
2.05 Newbury – I felt Scintillo was very impressive when winning the Winter Derby holding of Premio Loco last month and he could well have a fitness edge over some of today’s rivals. He should prove a difficult opponent for favourite Spanish Moon. Sir Michael Stoute’s runner does look tough to beat on form and it’s very hard to see him finishing outside the first 3 after a recent pipe opener. A repeat of his effort in the Group 1 Dubai Sheema Classic would make him very hard to beat.
2.35 Newbury – A decent quality handicap here but with 25 runners going to post, it looks almost impossible. John Gosden’s Charm School is worth another chance after his slightly disappointing run in the Lincoln last month. He probably didn’t have the best of draws that day and stayed on well to finish 8th. Zaahid ran a big race to finish 2nd that day but he’s up another 3lbs and is opposable off 99. The unexposed Manassas is probably also worth keeping on the right side of after the improved form he showed to win the Spring Mile at Doncaster. He’s up 5lbs for that victory but that doesn’t look harsh.
2.50 Ayr – The Scottish Champion Hurdle features a number of horses that have been on the go for a long time. It may pay to look for a fresh runner and I quite like the profile of Nicky Richards’ Noble Alan. He disappointed behind Sentry Duty at Ascot but his pull in the weights should seem him finish closer to that rival and it looks like they have kept him off the track since with this target in mind. 16/1 looks good value. Of those at the head of the market, Medermit would be the one most likely to run his race.
3.10 Newbury – I don’t often get heavily involved in fillies races because the form doesn’t always hold up but I do like the look of Mick Channon’s Lahaleeb. She’s a Group 2 winner and has also won over course and distance. There are a number of unexposed fillies in the line up but Daryl Holland’s mount certainly sets the standard.
Sir Michael Stoute has a healthy 20.3% strike rate at Newbury and Purissima is worth consideration. She won very nicely at Warwick before disappointing at Newmarket but that race could well have come too soon.
3.25 Ayr – I’m going to use trends to narrow down the field for the Scottish National;
Oppose any runners that competed in this season’s Aintree Grand National.
7 of the last 10 winners finished 1st, 2nd or 3rd last time out.
7 of the last 11 winners have been eight year olds.
Only 2 winning favourites in the last 10 years (one of which was a joint favourite).
Trainer Ferdy Murphy has won 3 of the last 9 renewals.
8 of the last 11 winners were 1st or 2nd season chasers.
9 of the last 10 winners had unseated or fallen less than twice previously.
The one that makes most appeal using this approach is Ferdy Murphy’s Nine De Sivola. Murphy has a great record here and the horse fits the majority of the key trends. Merigo is a worthy alternative if the rain continues to fall between now and post time. The more of a slog it turns into, the better for the chances of Timmy Murphy’s ride.
3.45 Newbury - Lord Shanakill makes most appeal for me in this Group 3 contest. He was a model of consistency last season and finished 2nd in the Group 1 Dewhurst in his final start, just ahead of Marcus Tregoning’s Finjan. It should be close between the pair of them again today but I just feel Karl Burke’s runner has the heart of a lion and would be tough in a tight finish.
