Bet365 Old Newton Cup

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

The bet365 Old Newton Cup is a Class 2 Heritage Handicap run over a trip of 1m4f and is open to horses aged 4 years and older. It’s Haydock Park’s longest standing race and there is £85,000 in added prize money on offer. The 2009 Old Newton Cup takes place on Saturday 4th July at 3.30pm.

Luca Cumani has dominated the race over the years and from the last five renewals, he has managed three winners and one second place. Cumani is represented by Falcativ in the 2009 event. This Bay Colt has won 3 of his 8 starts to date and looked to be going very much the right way before disappointing at Doncaster last time out. He doesn’t look well handicapped on the back of that run but you can’t ignore Cumani’s record in this race so we have to respect the chances of Falcativ.

Mark Johnston is very well represented at this stage with five entries. The pick of those looks to be Drill Sergeant who won the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes at Ascot last time out. He’s paid for his consistency this season by not getting any respite from the handicapper but he still managed to win that ultra competitive race at Ascot so who is to say the horse can’t repeat the trick in the Old Newton Cup.

2008 Melbourne Cup – Review

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

Blake Shinn gave Viewed a superb ride to capture the 2008 Melbourne Cup by a nose from the Luca Cumani trained Bauer. Cumani was finishing runner-up for the 2nd season in succession.

Blake Shinn told At The Races: “I got to the front way too early but he dug deep. He put in 110% today, he gave his all. He’s a master, Bart.

“I didn’t want to do a Greg Hall and go off too early (with my celebration) so I just sort of waited until I knew (if I’d won) and then I tried to soak it up as best I could.

“To win a Melbourne Cup at only 21, I’m just so delighted and hopefully the best is yet to come from me.”

Winnning trainer Bart Cummings added: “Well what a great day it’s been. I do make a habit of winning this race and someone once told me it’s a good habit to get into.

“It’s also great to see the Aussies succeed.”

Owner Dato Tan Chin Nam was enjoying his fourth victory in the race. He said: “I’m very happy that the horse won. He put up a gutsy run and I thought he had lost for moment.

“It was my fourth win and now I’m happy not to win any more but if it happens again, I will not complain!”

Cumani warning over Presvis

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

Luca Cumani has warned ante-post punters favourite Presvis is unlikely to run in the Totesport Cambridgeshire at Newmarket.

Cumani’s charge was installed at the head of the market after an impressive display in the John Smith’s Heritage Handicap at Newbury last Saturday, but according to his trainer, the horse is an unlikely participant.

“I have to repeat Presvis is an unlikely runner at Newmarket,” Cumani told At The Races.

“I don’t like the fact there is only two weeks between the two races and traditionally the Newbury race is not a good pointer for the Cambridgeshire.

“He is unlikely to run unless he is jumping out of his skin and telling me to go there. My inclination at the moment is to say no.”
