Coral Eclipse Preview

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

The Eclipse Stakes, or Coral Eclipse as it is now more commonly know, is a Group 1 flat race run over a trip of 1m2f and takes place at Sandown Park at the beginning of July each year. The race is named after the famous 18th century racehorse Eclipse and has been sponsored by Coral bookmakers since 1976.

The 2009 Coral Eclipse Stakes sees the all conquering Sea The Stars as a very strong favourite. John Oxx’s charge has won both the 2000 Guineas and the Derby so this trip of 1m2f should hold no problems.

Aidan O’Brien’s Rip Van Winkle is also prominent in the market. Usual pilot Johnny Murtagh is banned so Jimmy Fortune has picked up a great spare ride. He is very confident on the chances of his mount;

“Dropping back to a mile and a quarter should suit Rip Van Winkle and I think he’s got a great chance.”

Conduit from the Michael Stoute yard holds a similar chance to Rip Van Winkle according to the betting market. For me, his overall form has a more solid look to it and he could well be the value play in the race at around the 4/1 mark.

2008 Breeders Cup Turf

Friday, October 24th, 2008

The Breeders Cup Turf is one the of top races at the Breeders Cup meeting, coming 2nd only to the Classic. It is a Grade 1 weight for age race for 3 year olds and upwards. The race is run over a trip of one mile and four furlongs and the prize money on offer is $3,000,000.

European runners have dominated the Breeders Cup Turf in the last ten years having won 7 of the last 10 renewals. Frankie Dettori is certainly the man to watch in the race, having won on Red Rocks in 2006, Fantastic Light in 2001 and Daylami in 1999. This year he again rides Red Rocks. The horse has had his share of problems but looked better than ever when winning the Man o’ War at Belmont. Red Rocks is a best priced 8/1 with Ladbrokes which looks very tempting to me.

The market is headed by two European runners in Aidan O’Brien’s Soldier Of Fortune and Sir Michael Stoute’s Conduit. Soldier Of Fortune is an absolute class act and probably deserves to have won more races than he actually has. He bring top form into the race with his 3rd in the Arc behind Zarkava and is a 9/2 chance with 888Sport but as short as 3/1 with Bet Direct. St Leger winner Conduit made Sir Michael Stoute a very happy man by giving him his first St Leger victory. Stoute knows what it takes to win the Breeders Cup Turf having two victories to his name already. Conduit is generally a 9/2 chance to make it three but Ladbrokes have the horse as their favourite at 3/1.

Probably the most interesting runner in the field is the Michael De Kock trained Eagle Mountain. Strictly on the book he would have a bit to find but he has a profile I like. His win at Newmarket last time was his first race for a while and although it was only a Group 3, he did it in good style. He’s had an easy season in comparison with a lot of his rivals and De Kock is a trainer you have to respect. The bookies aren’t taking any chances, Eagle Mountain is as short as 9/2 with a couple of firms. Ladbrokes go best price at 6/1.

The American’s best chance looks to be with the Robert Ribaudo trained runner Grand Couturier. Undoubtedly a talented animal, the trainer’s comments put me off this one a bit. He feels the horse needs a bit of cut in the ground to show his best form and it doesn’t look like he will get that come Saturday.
