Big Bucks

Big Bucks

It’s Hennessy Gold Cup weekend and we have a feast of quality jumps action and we have a feast of quality jumps racing to get our teeth into. At Newbury, as well as the Hennessy itself, there is also the Long Distance Hurdle and over at Newcastle there should be some Champion Hurdle clues from the Fighting Fifth.

Saturday’s action comes from Fairyhouse, Kempton, Newbury, Newcastle, Towcester, Wexford and there is an evening meeting at Wolverhampton.

There are 7 live races on Channel 4, the 2.05, 2.40, 3.15 and 3.45 from Newbury, the 3.00 and 3.30 from Newcastle, and the 4.00 from Kempton.

If you back the winner of a live Channel 4 race at 4/1 or bigger, Bet365 will give you a free bet of up to £50 on the following Channel 4 race. This is a great offer for all you Saturday armchair punters.

The Hennessy Gold Cup is obviously the highlight of the day with Old Roan Chase winner Knowhere taking on the likes of Air Force One and Big Bucks. It looks a very wide open contest but I’ll be siding with Tom George’s Island Flyer getting lumps of weight from most of the fancied runners.

Just as interesting a contest is the Long Distance Hurdle which sees Cheltenham hero Inglis Drever make his seasonal reappearance. He faces old rival Blazing Bailey as well as the unbeaten Pettifour. I’d struggle to split the 3 of them, Inglis could find it hard to dominated the way he has in previous years, Blazing Bailey is difficult to get a handle on and throws in the odd poor performance for no apparent reason and Pettifour has a bit to find but is open to improvement. Probably a race to sit back and enjoy unless you have a strong opinion.

2008 Hennessy Gold Cup – Preview

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008

The 2008 Hennessy Congac Gold Cup takes place on Saturday 29th November at Newbury Racecourse. It is a Grade 3 National Hunt horse race run over 3 miles 2 and a ½ furlongs. The prize money to the winner is in excess of £80,000.

The 2007 Hennessy was one that will stick in my mind for many years to come. It was the race where Denman really showed the racing world what he was capable of and put himself bang in the picture for the Cheltenham Gold Cup, another race he went on to win.

Denman’s performance under top weight was breathtaking, devastating and oozed class. Every jump was foot perfect and he seemed to thrive in testing conditions when the rest of the field were struggling.

I doubt we will see anything near that level of form in the 2008 renewal but there are some interesting contenders for the race.

Nigel Twiston Davies’ Knowhere was cut for the Hennessey on the back of his win in the Old Roan Chase at Aintree on Sunday. The horse’s form prior to this effort was already quite solid having beaten Our Vic at Cheltenham in January in the Letheby And Christopher Chase as well as a 6th place finished in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, albeit a very distant one. The only thing I would say is that Nigel Twiston Davies’ runners are often more forward early in the season than some other trainers.

Big Bucks from the Paul Nicholls’ yard is another likely runner. He showed improved form on his final start of last season, winning the John Smith’s Mildmay Novices’ Chase at Aintree. He is still fairly lightly raced and you can never discount a runner from this stable.

Air Force One is a horse I like a lot and probably the one I fancy to make the most successful jump out of Novice company from last season’s batch. He was most impressive in the Ellier Developments Champion Novice Chase at Punchestown and is a solid each way bet for the Hennessy. He has been put in his place by Albertas Run on a couple of occasions but I feel Air Force One will improve this season.
