Totesport Beecher Chase
Tuesday, November 18th, 2008The 2008 Totesport Beecher Chase is takes place on Sunday 23rd November at Aintree. The race is run over a trip of 3 miles and 2 furlongs and is open to horses aged five years and older. It has become a key trial for the Grand National and should give some good pointers for the 2009 renewal.
2007 Beecher Chase winner Mr Pointment is the current favourite for this year’s event at 5/1 with the sponsors Totesport. Paul Nicholls’ charge is 7lb higher than when winning the race last season but he did it in such impressive fashion, that might not be enough to stop him. Mr Pointment didn’t get home in this year’s Grand National but back over this trip, he should have no problems.
Idle Talk is a horse that has been threatening to win a race of this stature for a while but has just missed out on a couple of occasions. His jumping has improved in recent times and he ran a cracker at Carlisle on his seasonal debut earlier this month under top weight, finishing 2nd to See You There. He struggled to stay in the 2008 Grand National but did get round, finishing in 14th place. Idle talk could give Mr Prominent something to think about and makes some each way appeal at 10/1.
At bigger odds, Philson Run could get involved at the business end. He doesn’t have many miles on the clock considering his age and he has gone well at Aintree in the past, having finished 4th in the 2007 Grand National. This horse is an out and out stayer and testing conditions would very much play into his hands.
