Tolworth Hurdle Preview

Friday, January 2nd, 2009

This Saturday’s big race is the Tolworth Hurdle at Sandown Park. Only six runners go to post but it looks a very competitive affair, with the front 3 in the market very hard to separate.

Current favourite is Nick Gifford’s Dee Ee Williams. He was touched off last time by Alan King’s Medermit in a hot race at Ascot but had looked very good winning his two previous starts. On a strict line through Medermit, Paul Nicholls’ runner Mahonia should have every chance of beating Dee Ee Williams. Mahonia beat Medermit by 13 lengths at Exeter in November although he was receiving weight that day, Dee Ee Williams went down to Medermit off levels.

Clay Hollister lines up for the in form Nicky Henderson and Tony McCoy. He looked like he could be anything when winning last time after an injury lay off and you’d been foolish to rule him out.

Henrietta Knight had a winner at Cheltenham earlier in the week and her charge Somersby won in very nice fashion at Kempton last time out.

Tolworth Hurdle Trends
Here are some key trends that should help with your selection process.

Paul Nicholls has won 4 of the last 6 renewals.

Five year olds have won 5 of the last 8 renewals.

The last 11 winners have finished 1ts or 2nd on their previous start.

9 of the last 11 winners were 1st or 2nd favourite.

Tolworth Hurdle Betting (Prices from BlueSq)
Mahonia 7/4
Dee Ee Williams 2/1
Clay Hollister 7/2
Somersby 7/1
Benfleet Boy 25/1
Cabinet Minister 25/1

King George VI Chase Preview

Monday, December 22nd, 2008
Kauto Star

Kauto Star

There is little time to get over our Christmas Day feast before the King George is upon us. Kauto Star is bidding to become only the third horse to win the race three times but he will need to leave a poor performance last time well behind him.

The King George Chase takes place every Boxing Day at Kempton Park. It is a Grade 1 race, run over a trip of three miles and is open to horses aged 4 years and above. There are a total of eighteen fences to be tackled.

This year’s event sees Kauto Star head the market at 6/4 generally. He’s the class act in the field and his only blip was last time out, falling when coming to challenge in the Betfair Chase at Haydock. He has a host of new challengers this year but is deservedly a short price to make it three King George victories in a row.

Alan King’s Voy Por Ustedes is taking a step up in trip to contest the 3 mile events this season after dominating the top races over 2 miles in recent years. He’s been the model of consistency and probably needed the run when beaten last time. King is confident of him being up to the task over 3 miles but he’s possibly a little short at 3/1 with something still to prove.

Imperial Commander is the most interested horse in the race for me. The Paddy Power Gold Cup winner could have any amount of improvement left. While he would need to find a few lbs to trouble some of his rivals on official figures, the manor in which he won the Paddy Power suggests he’s up to the challenge. At a best price of 8/1, Imperial Commander is a solid each way bet.

King George Trends

8 of the last 10 winners were from the first two in the betting.

4 of the last 11 renewals have been won by Paul Nicholls.

9 of the last 11 winners were rated 160 or higher.

Just 1 winner older than nine since 1990.

12 of the last 13 winners had won last time out.

Boylesports Gold Cup

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008
Imperial Commander

Imperial Commander

This Saturday’s Boylesports Gold Cup sees Paddy power Gold Cup winner, Imperial Commander, return to Cheltenham. Can he follow up his impressive victory?

The Boylesports Gold Cup is a Grade 3 Handicap Chase run over two miles five furlongs and consists of seventeen fences. The race has had a number of different sponsors over the years but was probably most well known as the Tripleprint Gold Cup.

Imperial Commander is the current 9/4 favourite and that price looks about right on the back of his win in last month’s Paddy Power. He has taken a significant rise in the weights but trainer Nigel Twiston Davies reports him to be in good order and it would come as no surprise to see Imperial Commander defy his new handicap mark. A possible negative is the fact only 3 horses have managed to win the Paddy Power and this race in the same season, another is only 1 of the last 10 favourites have been successful.

Paul Nicholls Silverburn is an 11/2 chance and before his slightly disappointing run in the Paddy Power Gold Cup, his handler was raving about him following a wind operation. With Noland winning at Punchestown earlier this week, the stable may be ready to put a few bad weeks behind them and we could see an improved performance from Silverburn.

Another horse with winning form at Cheltenham is Tom Taaffe’s Finger On the Pulse. I’m not sure if he’s quite top class but he seems fairly genuine. The form of his run behind Noland was franked this week and this runner must have a live each way chance at 10/1.

Boylesports Gold Cup Trends
9 of the last 10 winners were placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd last time out.

Only 1 of the last 10 favourites have won.

No winner older then 8 since 1994.

Only 1 winner in the last 10 years carried more than 11st 3lbs.

Boylesports Gold Cup Betting (Prices From Bet365)
Imperial Commander 9/4

Peterborough Chase

Monday, December 8th, 2008

The 2008 Peterborough Chase takes place this Thursday 11th December at Huntingdon. It’s a Grade 2 Chase run over 2 miles and 4 furlongs. Henrietta Knight has dominated the race having saddled 8 of the last 10 winners. Surprisingly, she has no entries in the race this year.

There are currently 23 horses still entered for Thursday’s Peterborough Chase but I’d imagine this number to reduce significantly before then with a number of trainers waiting to see what conditions are like before committing.

There are some very interesting horses in the field including Old Roan Chase winner Snoopy Loopy, Nicky Henderson’s very talented Trabolgan who has been off the track for 3 years and heading the weights is Noland from the Paul Nicholls’ yard.

Trainer of Monet’s Garden, Nicky Richards, think his horse will go well after a disappointing effort at Aintree last time.

“Monet’s Garden is in grand form and we are just building him up to go to Huntingdon now for the Peterborough Chase,” he told At The Races.

“I think everyone needs to forget his Aintree run as the ground was very testing and he has never been able to show his best on that ground.”
Although Trabolgan is entered for the Peterborough, he is more likely to run at Ascot on December 20th.

Trainer Nicky Henderson said: “He is in the Peterborough but I have found a nice open handicap at Ascot in a couple of weeks, and he is more likely to go there.”
Noland is also a doubt with him being more likely to go for the rescheduled John Durkan Memorial Chase at Punchestown tomorrow.

Peterborough Chase Tips

Tingle Creek Trophy

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

The Tingle Creek Trophy is a Grade 1 National Hunt race open to horses aged five years and older. The race is run over two miles in early December at Sandown Park racecourse. It is named after the horse Tingle Creek who had a great record at Sandown during the 1970’s.

Tingle Creek Trends
Trainer Paul Nicholls has an outstanding record in the race with 5 winners in the last 10 renewals.

Dual winners are common. In the last 10 years, Flagship Uberalles won 3 times and Moscow Flyer and Kauto Star have won twice.

Look for horse at the head of the betting, outsiders do not win this race often.

2008 Tingle Creek Trophy
This year’s renewal sees Paul Nicholls’ Master Minded make his seasonal debut. In this year’s Queen Mother Champion Chase at Cheltenham, Master Minded put up a performance the likes of which we don’t see very often. He looked like a world beater. It was a different story the following month at Aintree though where his colours were lowered in no uncertain fashion by Vor Poy Ustedes.

With Ruby Walsh out injured, 2nd stable jockey Sam Thomas has been deputising for Nicholls. Things haven’t gone as smoothly as they did for Thomas last year though and there is talk of him being jocked off Master Minded and Tony McCoy taking the ride in the Tingle Creek.

Master Minded is currently a very short 1/2 favourite. Although there is no denying the horse’s ability, he’s the highest rated horse in training, it’s not a price I’d want to be taking with the furore surrounding the Nicholls stable at the moment.

Last year’s winner Twist Magic is becoming a little frustrating. He looked to have a great chance at Exeter last time in the William Hill Gold Cup but finished a disappointing 4th. If he’s on top of his game, he’ll be in with a good chance of making it back to back wins but that is a big if.

Nicky Henderson’s Jack The Giant is an interesting contender. He was very impressive at Ascot last time and with the form the stable are currently in, this horse could really provide Team Nicholls with some tough opposition.

EBA Weekend Horse Racing Preview 29/11/08

Friday, November 28th, 2008
Big Bucks

Big Bucks

It’s Hennessy Gold Cup weekend and we have a feast of quality jumps action and we have a feast of quality jumps racing to get our teeth into. At Newbury, as well as the Hennessy itself, there is also the Long Distance Hurdle and over at Newcastle there should be some Champion Hurdle clues from the Fighting Fifth.

Saturday’s action comes from Fairyhouse, Kempton, Newbury, Newcastle, Towcester, Wexford and there is an evening meeting at Wolverhampton.

There are 7 live races on Channel 4, the 2.05, 2.40, 3.15 and 3.45 from Newbury, the 3.00 and 3.30 from Newcastle, and the 4.00 from Kempton.

If you back the winner of a live Channel 4 race at 4/1 or bigger, Bet365 will give you a free bet of up to £50 on the following Channel 4 race. This is a great offer for all you Saturday armchair punters.

The Hennessy Gold Cup is obviously the highlight of the day with Old Roan Chase winner Knowhere taking on the likes of Air Force One and Big Bucks. It looks a very wide open contest but I’ll be siding with Tom George’s Island Flyer getting lumps of weight from most of the fancied runners.

Just as interesting a contest is the Long Distance Hurdle which sees Cheltenham hero Inglis Drever make his seasonal reappearance. He faces old rival Blazing Bailey as well as the unbeaten Pettifour. I’d struggle to split the 3 of them, Inglis could find it hard to dominated the way he has in previous years, Blazing Bailey is difficult to get a handle on and throws in the odd poor performance for no apparent reason and Pettifour has a bit to find but is open to improvement. Probably a race to sit back and enjoy unless you have a strong opinion.

Hennessy Gold Cup Trends

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008
Island Flyer

Island Flyer

The Hennessy Gold Cup has some fairly strong trends that are worth consideration when trying to find the winner.

They key trends for this race are:
Runners aged 6 or 7 years old have won 8 of the last 10 renewals.

8 of the last 10 winners have started at odds of 10/1 or less.

7 of the last 10 winners have carried 11st or less.

The last 12 winners were all placed 1st or 2nd last time out.

The only runner that fits all these trends is Island Flyer. He is a 6 year old, carries 10 stone, finished 2nd last time out and is generally a 7/1 chance in the market.

Tom George’s runner appears to have a bit to find from a class point of view but the stable have been in great form this season and Island Flyer has only tasted defeat once since going chasing, that was last time out when beaten a nose by Cornish Sett. George believes his horse will be better for that run though and with just 10st on his back, Island Flyer must have every chance of causing an upset over the bigger stables.

Scoop 6 Preview – Saturday 22/11/08

Friday, November 21st, 2008

I thought last week’s Scoop 6 was the biggest we would see for quite some time but yet again, it wasn’t won. Let’s hope it’s a single line or small syndicate that’s successful rather than someone who’s already a millionaire.

Like last week, I’m going to try and select a shortlist for each race and then a final selection. It’s a bit disappointing there are so many race from the all weather card at Lingfield. A number of the horses contesting these races have seen a lot of action the last few months and the form can be erratic.

Race 1 – 2.10 Lingfield
An extremely tough handicap to get us underway with a few possible improvers going up against proven all weather performers.

Gay Kelleway’s Fajr is a much better horse on the all weather than he is on turf and 7 of his 8 wins have come here at Lingfield but only 1 of those victories was over this trip, the other 6 were over a mile. The last of those wins was in this grade off a 1lbs higher mark so he would have to enter calculations, I just feel he’s badly handicapped against some of these rivals.

Swift Gift is interesting for Martin Dwyer and Brian Meehan. He’s been contesting some decent 3yo handicaps on the turf and his 3 ½ length 4th place finish behind Plum Pudding at Newmarket last month reads well.

Atlantic Story has two wins over course and distance to his name but they were both under Jamie Spencer who instead rides Madahee for Clive Brittain. Both these runners are trying to win from career high marks but of the two, Madahee is the one I would side with as a 3yo even though he is up 10lbs for his impressive win at Great Leighs earlier this month.

My Gacho doesn’t quite look up to this grade and Ebraam is badly handicapped although both horses have been running well and could be placed again.

If playing a perm, it may pay to put in one runner that is proven in the grade and on the all weather surface, as well as one of the younger improving horses.

Shortlist: Madahee, Swift Gift, Fajr.

Selection: Swift Gift

Race 2 – 2.40 Lingfield
It doesn’t get any easier with another race where you could make a case for the majority of the field.

Secret Night is only 1lb higher than when winning a similar event over course and distance. She has seen a lot of racing since though and that would put me off her chances slightly.

Miss Brown To You got off the mark at Great Leighs last time in a muddling race, beating a few of these rivals in the process. This lightly raced filly is open to improvement and hails from a stable that is hard to ignore in this type of event.

Spring Goddess was 2nd behind Miss Brown To You in that event and shouldn’t be far away again on these terms.

Shortlist: Secret Night, Miss Brown To You, Spring Goddess.

Selection: Miss Brown To You

Race 3 – 2.45 Haydock
There’s a decent prize on offer to the winner of this Class 2 handicap where 16 runners go to post.

The top horse Darkness is a particularly interesting contender. He’s been off the track for 945 days and it would be some training performance to have him ready to win a race like this but his previous chase form would give him a massive chance off a mark of 142.

I always take note of anything Venetia Williams sends into battle in these types of races but Mon Mome seems to perform better with a run under his belt.

Osako D’airy from the Paul Nicholls yard is bound to be a popular choice for casual punters. For me, his form doesn’t look special enough to warrant his place at the head of the market. I often oppose these Nicholls favourites in handicaps as I did last week with Silverburn. They do win sometimes but they also get over bet and go off at more prohibitive odds than they should.

I struggle to get a handle on runners from the Henrietta Knight stable and Glasker Mill is another I can’t make head nor tail of. He’s still fairly unexposed over fences and after a shaky start to his chasing career with two falls, he picked up a decent price at Cheltenham last November. He could strip a lot fitter off the back of his run at Cheltenham last month and is the only runner in the field with a win to his name at the track, albeit over hurdles.

Philip Hobbs runners performed quite well in the big races last weekend and I think Gold Medallist could do the same here. He was a very good performer on the flat and may well come into his own over fences this season. He contested some decent Novice Chases last year and doesn’t look badly handicapped to these eyes.

Shortlist: Darkness, Glasker Mill, Gold Medallist.

Selection: Gold Medallist.

Race 4 – 3.20 Lingfield
A very competitive Listed race sees Royal Hunt Cup winner Mr Aviator go up against John Gosden’s lightly raced Bronze Cannon.

I’m really having a tough time narrowing down the field here. Baharah and Harvest Queen are closely matched on their race over a mile here last month. At least we know both are in decent form and there is no reason why these fillies won’t run well here again.

The horse that stands out for me is Michael Jarvis’ Philatelist. He has been off the track a while but coming here fresh might not be a bad thing. He is a course and distance winner and has the beating of Mr Aviator going by their meeting at Kempton in March.

Clive Brittain’s Yahrab is 2 from 2 on the all weather over this trip and has the assistance of Jamie Spencer in the plate. He’s still relatively lightly raced and could well prove a threat stepping back into Listed company.

Shortlist: Harvest Queen, Yahrab, Philatelist.

Selection: Philatelist.

Race 5 – 3.30 Huntingdon
The worst of the six races in terms of quality and probably the toughest to get enthusiastic about any of the participants.

The tissue favourite is Tim Vaughan’s House Of Bourbon. This horse was with Charlie Swan in Ireland and did have some reasonable form over there but it’s hard to know what it amounts to exactly but it’s probably as good as anything else in the field.

Lowe Go and Domenico have both won off higher marks in the past but are both also average and on the downgrade.

Acosta had looked very average until winning easily last time out at 20/1. He’s been put up 12lbs for that win and it’s hard to see him following up.

Millards Lad looks well in on his chase form but he’s never produced the same level of form over hurdles. Even so, I’d say he has a level of ability above anything else in this field.

Pearly Star knows how to win but is probably a little high in the weights.

Charlie Mann’s Rebel Melody is the only other one I could seriously consider. This course and distance winner is lightly raced for a 7yo and comes back to hurdling after a couple of disappointing chase efforts.

Shortlist: House Of Bourbon, Millards Lad, Rebel Melody.

Selection: Rebel Melody.

Race 6 – 3.50 Lingfield
A nice little six furlong race to finish and one where I think the ultra consistent Ceremonial Jade will be tough to beat. His record at Lingfield is superb with 3 wins, 3 2nds and a 3rd from 8 runs. His record over 6 furlongs reads 3 wins and 2 2nds from 6 runs.

Chief Editor is likely to give Ceremonial Jade something to think about if taking to the polytrack. He did win at Southwell on his racecourse debut.

Bonus ran a stinker during the week but I wouldn’t not be surprised if he bounced back with Hayley Turner back in the saddle.

John Gosden’s Prohibit contested some very decent races during the summer and he scored in decent fashion at Great Leighs last time. He merits serious consideration.

Shortlist: Ceremonial Jade, Chief Editor, Prohibit.

Selection: Ceremonial Jade.

EBA Weekend Horse Racing Preview 22/11/08

Friday, November 21st, 2008

Some top class racing this Saturday which includes Kauto Star’s bid for a third successive Betfair Chase at Haydock, but all eyes will again be on the Scoop 6. It looks like it must be won this week but will it be one of the big syndicates or a single £2 punter?

Saturday’s action comes from Ascot, Gowran Park, Haydock, Huntingdon, Lingfield as well as an evening meeting from Wolverhampton.

There are 12 live races on terrestrial TV. The BBC are showing the 1.05, 1.40 and 2.15 from Haydock and the 1.20 and 1.55 from Ascot. Channel 4 are showing the 2.10, 3.20 and 3.50 from Lingfield, the 2.25 and 3.30 from Huntingdon, the 2.45 from Haydock and the 3.05 at Ascot.

If you back the winner of a live Channel 4 race at 4/1 or bigger, Bet365 will give you a free bet of up to £50 on the following Channel 4 race. This is a great offer for all you Saturday armchair punters.

The big race of the day is Haydock’s 2.15 the Betfair Chase. Paul Nicholls’ Kauto Star is a very short priced favourite to complete a hat trick of wins in this race. He won as he liked at Down Royal last time and only looks to have Exotic Dancer to beat. It’s a very poor turn out considering the prize money on offer.

For fans of the flat, there are a couple of good Listed races taking place at Lingfield with Peter Makin’s Harvest Queen looking an interesting contender in the 3.20.

Scoop 6 News
The Scoop 6 is going to reach new heights this week. The win fund currently stands at £2,037,527 and could easily double by race time. The bet costs just £2 and even if you can find 6 horses to place, you could be looking at a very nice payout indeed.

The Scoop 6 races are as follows;
2.10 Lingfield
2.40 Lingfield
2.45 Haydock
3.20 Lingfield
3.30 Huntingdon
3.50 Lingfield

You can normally get 10% cashback on your Scoop 6 bets with both Skybet and BlueSq. Both bookmakers also offer new clients a free bet. Totesport are offering 5% cashback.

Totesport Beecher Chase

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

The 2008 Totesport Beecher Chase is takes place on Sunday 23rd November at Aintree. The race is run over a trip of 3 miles and 2 furlongs and is open to horses aged five years and older. It has become a key trial for the Grand National and should give some good pointers for the 2009 renewal.

2007 Beecher Chase winner Mr Pointment is the current favourite for this year’s event at 5/1 with the sponsors Totesport. Paul Nicholls’ charge is 7lb higher than when winning the race last season but he did it in such impressive fashion, that might not be enough to stop him. Mr Pointment didn’t get home in this year’s Grand National but back over this trip, he should have no problems.

Idle Talk is a horse that has been threatening to win a race of this stature for a while but has just missed out on a couple of occasions. His jumping has improved in recent times and he ran a cracker at Carlisle on his seasonal debut earlier this month under top weight, finishing 2nd to See You There. He struggled to stay in the 2008 Grand National but did get round, finishing in 14th place. Idle talk could give Mr Prominent something to think about and makes some each way appeal at 10/1.

At bigger odds, Philson Run could get involved at the business end. He doesn’t have many miles on the clock considering his age and he has gone well at Aintree in the past, having finished 4th in the 2007 Grand National. This horse is an out and out stayer and testing conditions would very much play into his hands.

Beecher Chase Trends
There are some trends that may help with selecting the winner of the Totesport Beecher Chase, they are as follows;

Look for horses that have run 2 times or less in the current season.

8 of last 10 winners have been aged between 8 and 10 years old.

10 of last 15 winners finished placed in the first 3 on their last start.

6 of last 10 winners carried under 11st.
