Cheltenham 2010 - Royal & Sun Alliance Chase

Royal & Sun Alliance Chase

Royal & Sun Alliance Chase

The RSA Chase is a three mile race for novice chasers and it’s an event that often throws up future Gold Cup contenders. Denman won the Royal & Sun Alliance Chase in 2007 and went on to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup the following year.

Irish trainer Willie Mullins has saddled three winners of the Royal & Sun Alliance Chase since 1998 but as a general rule, Irish horses under perform in this race.

This race was previously known as the Broadway Novices’ Chase and Totalisator Champion Novices’ Chase.

2010 Royal & Sun Alliance Chase

Nicky Henderson’s Punchestowns is the current 7/2 market leader for the 2010 Royal & Sun Alliance Chase. Last season’s World Hurdle runner up was mightily impressive on his chase debut at Newbury in the Grade 2 Fuller’s London Pride Novices’ Chase. Exactly what he beat that day is open to question but there is no doubting the class of this animal.

The Henderson yard have a very strong hand in this event as 2nd favourite in the Ante Post market is Punchestowns’ stable mate Long Run. He won the Feltham at Kempton on his UK debut, beating Tazbar by 14 lengths in the process. Tazbar has since gone on to frank the form and only negative for Long Run would be the fact he has a strong age trend to overcome.

There doesn’t look to be much between Pandorama and Weapon’s Amnesty on their meeting at Leopardstown in December but at the prices I’d be more keen on an each way Ante Post interest on Noel Meade’s runner Pandorama who is currently a best priced 14/1.
