Darley July Cup Preview

The Darley July Cup is a Group 1 flat race run over a trip of six furlongs. It takes place during the 3 days July meeting at Newmarket and is open to horses aged 3 years and older. The race is one of the biggest in the UK as far as prize money is concerned with £400,000 in added prize money on offer.

No one trainer has dominated the event in recent times but both Aidan O’Brien and Hughie Morrison have won the race twice each in the last ten years. Morrison’s two victories have been with only two runners in the race giving him a 100% record in the last decade.

The 2009 Darley July Cup betting is headed by impressive Royal Ascot winner Scenic Blast. The Australian challenger looked superb in winning the Kings Stand and is a very worth favourite on the back of that performance. Fleeting Spirit ran an excellent race to finish 2nd to Scenic Blast at Ascot but Jeremy Noseda’s charge is usually at her peak first time out and it would be hard to see her reversing the form here.

Art Connoisseur’s victory in the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot would make him a danger to all. That race was over the same trip of 6f as the Darley July Cup so this race should hold no fear for Jamie Spencer’s mount.
